Lake of Cool Fin (1999)

Yerba Buena Art Center, San Francisco, CA

This piece was inspired by an old Irish folk song sung by Tommy Carnes about a young boy, who despite several warnings from his family, sneaks out in the early morning with a friend to go for a swim in the Lake of Cool Fin. His mother rises later that same morning to news of her son having drowned to death.

Lake moss covered the floor, a speaker was embedded in the wall from which the song continuously played. A drain was placed in the middle of the bed that had a video of water wastefully flowing down a sink. The sound of rushing water came from inside the bed and a decoy duck hung above it. The potatoes sprouted and began to rot during the duration of the installation.
